The Children's Hour on 35mm + Book Talk with Author, Critic & Curator Michael Koresky

Join us Tuesday, July 22 as we proudly launch new, year-round series Out There with a screening of THE CHILDREN'S HOUR, followed by a book event!

Audrey Hepburn and Shirley MacLaine star in THE CHILDREN'S HOUR, directed by William Wyler and adapted from Lillian Hellman’s controversial 1934 stage play of the same name. Hepburn and MacLaine play headmistresses of a girl’s boarding school and longtime friends whose lives are turned upside down when a student begins spreading the rumor that the two are lesbian lovers. THE CHILDREN'S HOUR garnered five Academy Award nominations, and signaled the beginning of a sea change in Hollywood’s attitude towards the discussion of homosexuality in films.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with author, curator, and critic Michael Koresky—whose new book "Sick and Dirty: Hollywood’s Gay Golden Age and the Making of Modern Queerness" will be available for sale after the screening, courtesy of The Village Bookstore. Presented in partnership with The LOFT LGBTQ+ Community Center, new JBFC Series Out There celebrates queer stories through a diverse selection of films from around the world—exploring love, identity, resilience, and joy. This series, with a screening every month, will showcase the vibrant spectrum of the LGBTQ+ experience in all its glory—and, in line with our mission, help to spark dialogue and build community.
