Join us for a special evening of learning and service as we welcome a team from Bethel Baptist Church in Pleasant Grove, including Becky Saterday, who will be teaching us how to make sleeping mats for the homeless using recycled plastic bags. โป๏ธ๐๏ธ
These mats are crocheted from โplarnโ โ yarn made from plastic bags ๐๏ธ like those from Walmart or Dollar General. There are several steps, and you can learn just one or all of them:
๐น Step 1: Flatten and cut the bags
๐น Step 2: Connect strips into plarn
๐น Step 3: Crochet the mat using the plarn ๐งต
Each mat takes about 50โ60 hours to complete and measures around 3 ft x 6 ft. It usually takes two balls of plarn per mat. If you'd like to crochet, weโll let you know what size hook ๐ช to bring. If you prefer not to crochet, you can help by cutting bags and making plarn.
โ๏ธ Bring a good, sharp pair of household scissors.
๐ฝ๏ธ You can work at your own pace from home, and there are helpful YouTube videos available.
๐๏ธ You can also help by saving your plastic bags!
Since 2013, the Bethel group has made around 368 matsโ168 sent to Nicaragua ๐ณ๐ฎ and the rest donated to the homeless in Birmingham ๐๏ธ.
Letโs join this beautiful mission and make a difference together! ๐
