Songwriting: Learn to Write Songs That Tell (Your) Stories

feel a thought. – Yip Harburg (lyricist, Wizard of Oz)
Writing is a powerful tool for self-discovery and connection. Journaling, letter-writing,
and poetry are familiar tools used to explore thoughts and emotions. In this class, you
will turn those ideas into song, a form of writing which has the unique ability to “make
{people} feel a thought,” as Yip Harburg said.
Through the 3-class session, you'll learn about and experience:
•The fundamentals of songwriting, including lyric writing, melody, and song structure
•Song examples across genres
•A growth-oriented peer feedback process, key to a supportive, creative learning
experience
•The magic of song to tell your stories, and ultimately, to connect with self and others
A Minnesota native and Lee resident since 20214, Liv Cummins is a singer/songwriter,
comedy performer, musical theater dramatist, and educator who received a B.A. in
Theater from Skidmore College and an MFA from NYU’s Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program.
Upon her husband and collaborators passing in May 2024, she co-founded the Sandy McKnight Songwriters Fund to advance his legacy, a lifetime of work in music and songwriting inspiring and
advancing artists (and beginners) across styles, ages, and backgrounds. The Fund provides
songwriters and performing artists opportunities to further their craft, showcase their
work, and build community.
This series is FREE to attend for LIR members but you must pre-register and be able to attend all 3 days
