The Pinedale Fine Arts Council is proud to present Ballet Ariel performing both The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe (Act 1) and The Nutcracker Suite (Act 2) on Saturday December 6 at 7:00 p.m. in the Sheppard Auditorium.
Ballet Ariel is a professional company located in Denver, Colorado specializing in expressive, narrative ballets that meld classical traditions with contemporary themes and interpretations.
Based on the popular book by C.S. Lewis, and with original choreography, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is set in the 1940s. The ballet begins when four siblings, Lucy, Edmund, Susan, and Peter, visit the Old Professor and discover an empty room with a large wardrobe. Young Lucy opens the wardrobe door and steps in. Her brother Edmund follows her as they find themselves in a wintery forest of the magical world of Narnia. A series of adventures begin that include an umbrella-carrying faun, an evil White Witch, a beaver couple, a kind-hearted lion, and myriad other characters. They, along with the siblings, engage in a mystical battle of good over evil. Although the White Witch traps Narnia in a seemingly endless winter, the great lion Aslan, merry Father Christmas and the promise of spring arriving brings beauty and hope to the holiday season.
Westword says “[Ballet Ariel’s] adaptation of the beloved tale is nothing short of magical!"
The second ballet of Ballet Ariel’s holiday production is Nutcracker Suite, a selection of dances from Tchaikovsky’s ballet, The Nutcracker. The Suite highlights some of the most famous dances from the holiday-themed ballet from Act II in which Clara arrives in the Land of Sweets. There she is welcomed by the Sugar Plum Fairy and treated to dances representative of various nationalities and cultures.
