The Piedmont Historical Preservation Society (PHPS) is proud to announce the arrival of ten student interns this fall through a partnership with the University of South Carolina Upstate. This opportunity is made possible by a three-year grant from the Mellon Foundation, which supports hands-on internship
experiences across a variety of academic disciplines.
As part of the program, six interns are serving on-site at PHPS. Their work includes organizing and inventorying museum collections, conducting research on archival materials, and developing new online
historical exhibits. Four additional interns are working primarily on the transcription of historical documents to make these valuable resources accessible to scholars and the public, while also contributing to exhibit development.
Because the Mellon Foundation grant extends over three years, PHPS anticipates the opportunity to host interns on an annual basis for the duration of the program. Each internship spans ten weeks; the current session began September 5th and will continue through early November.
PHPS Project Supervisor Joe Hursey is serving as site supervisor, overseeing the interns’ projects and providing hands-on training in public history practices. By the conclusion of this session, PHPS expects that most of its archival collections will be fully processed and that at least five online exhibits will be
available through the organization’s website.
This partnership represents a significant step forward for PHPS in its mission to preserve, interpret, and share the history of the Piedmont community.
Join us on Friday afternoon, 11/7/25, as the Interns present an overview of this semester's completed projects.
