When the worldwide pandemic wreaked havoc on the careers of many musicians, Samantha Martin & Delta Sugar used their time off the road to record, mix, and master their latest tour-de-force: “The Reckless One”. Astonishingly powerful, funky, and deeply soulful, the album builds on the momentum of 2018’s Juno-nominated “Run To Me”. It marks another bold step forward for Samantha Martin as a songwriter, singer, arranger, and band leader.
Eleven of the album’s twelve tracks were either co-written or solely composed by Martin, with the lone cover—a funk-infused rendition of Bob Dylan’s “Meet Me in the Morning”—delivering a thrilling collision of Dylan’s lyrics with the gritty spirit of The Meters, Howlin’ Wolf, and Tina Turner at their rawest. It’s a must-hear masterpiece.
“The Reckless One” earned a Juno nomination for Blues Album of the Year in 2020, multiple Maple Blues Award nods, and even saw Samantha Martin & Delta Sugar recognized as International Artist of the Year at the UK Blues Awards.
