Kintsugi: Finding Beauty in the Broken
With Kristel Nielsen and Tess Mosko Scherer
📅 September 13, 2025
🕐 1:00–4:00 PM
📍 Mood Room, 3121 N 3rd Ave STE 100, Phoenix, AZ 85013
The ancient Japanese practice of kintsugi teaches us that brokenness is not something to hide but an essential part of our wholeness. In this workshop, participants will select a ceramic bowl, break it, and thoughtfully transform it through painting, writing, and repair.
The inside of the bowl will hold words that represent the hidden parts of ourselves; the outside will carry images reflecting the many aspects of who we are. Finally, the broken pieces will be rejoined in the spirit of kintsugi—reminding us that repair brings new beauty, strength, and meaning.
As one past participant reflected:
“Kintsugi reminds us that life, like things, can and do break and fall apart, but that with careful and attentive repair, there can be new beauty, strength, character, a different kind of wholeness, and continued usefulness.” – Yasko Endo
All materials are provided. No prior art experience required.
This event takes place during the exhibition, Unspoken, Survivors Stories. We will be hosting Saturday workshops that are free and open to the public. Space is limited, so please register in advance.
