The Banality of Evil in Nazi Germany: "Zone of Interest"

Auschwitz was the largest of the German Nazi concentration camps and extermination centers. Over 1.1 million men, women and children lost their lives here. ZONE OF INTEREST (2023, 106 min) - Jonathan Glazer's radical take on the Holocaust - is a brutal masterpiece, which won him and his team five Oscars.

In 1943, the commandant of Auschwitz, Rudolf Höss, and his wife, Hedwig, strive to build a dream life for their family in a house right next to the concentration and extermination camp he helped create. Dispassionately examining the ordinary existence of people complicit in horrific crimes, the film forces us to take a cold look at the mundanity behind an unforgivable brutality.
