Respiratory Care of the Medically Fragile Child

Respiratory Care of the Medically Fragile Child is a class for homecare nurses (LPNs and RNs) who would like to expand on their knowledge of invasive and noninvasive technology. This instructive two-part event consists of (1) three prerequisite lessons online and (2) an in-person day of lectures, hands-on training and simulation sessions. Lunch will be provided. Prior to the event, you will need to complete an online course. The completed course modules are due April 17, 2025, by 5 p.m. EST. To access the modules, follow these steps:

Step 1: Take the pretest found here.

Step 2: Once you complete the pretest, you will be given access to the online course (due 4/17/25 at 5 p.m. ET).

Note: If you are registering multiple participants, you must add the contact information (email and phone number) of each person attending the course. This enables us to ensure each registrant completes the online learning prior to attending the in-person training. Admission to the in-person training and CE credit will not be granted without this confirmation.

Check-in begins at 7:30 a.m. When you arrive at the event, please check in at the Colket Translational Research Building, CTRB 2020, located at 3501 Civic Center Blvd., Philadelphia, PA 19104. You will need to provide a form of identification (photo ID, driver’s license, etc.), as well as your registration ticket, to enter.

Objectives:

• Verbalize important safety measures to be enforced during every shift of care

• Recognize common invasive and noninvasive ventilator settings and how they affect the type of support delivered
• Describe the interventions necessary for different types of ventilator alarms

• List the variety of available airway clearance measures and the method for airway clearance depending on the type of respiratory technology ordered

• Perform ventilator troubleshooting for the most common ventilators in use in the Mid-Atlantic Tri-state area

• Demonstrate a tracheostomy change along with appropriate care

• Display understanding of how to respond to an emergency for a mechanically ventilated child

Accreditation Statement: Children's Hospital of Philadelphia is licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Health and accredited by The Joint Commission. This course will award 10.75 CE credit hours for license renewal.
