Postcards and Poems: Donation-Based

Postcards and Poems Agenda:

Everyone attending this event will be given four vintage postcards. We will not only be discussing the location of their favorite out of the four, but also what the images evoke for them-- be it mood, senses, and personal emotional connections after a brief period, and then jotting down initial reactions.

After, we explore the use of postcards as similar to a single issue product not unlike an old CD/tape/Itunes single and how those work to promote your poetry and reach a larger audience by way of circulation. After that discussion, issues of Janie's magazine, HOOT Review will be distributed, to show how the art on the postcard speaks to the poem (and not vice versa) and explain the methods we use at the magazine to create the art for the accompanying poem.

Two writing exercises follow this up: the first would be writing a short poem (with HOOT submission guidelines: under 150 words and poems under 20 lines) in response to their chosen vintage postcard.

The second writing exercise being a short poem in response to a given theme (no images provided) and discussing how the attendees would envision the design and the poem being intertwined (what unexpected images, mood, senses are in the poem that might not directly be mentioned within the work). We would discuss what feels more natural.

For those interested, Janie can assist those interested in designing a postcard after the workshop (helping with the art, providing the dimensions for printing, and various printers she's used).
