Dr. Jim Herkert will present the eBird survey he is conducting at New Salem. eBird is a free mobile app that allows users to record bird observations in the field. Jim will also show how the app helps birders identify and locate species, and how public participation supports citizen science.
Angela Gillmore Kim, MLS will demonstrate how she digitized Petersburg-area newspapers from microfilm, making them accessible online to anyone with an internet connection. Her project brings local history to your fingertips.
Dr. Robert Lowenthal will take us beyond the skies with a fascinating look at astrophotography. He will explain how he captures stunning images of deep-space phenomena and how digital tools make the invisible visible.
The program will close with a performance by Wild Columbine — a trio featuring Sally McDaniel-Smith, Megan Thornberry, and William Furry. With more than 100 years of combined musical experience, the ensemble performs traditional American music from the 17th to 19th centuries. Their rich and varied set includes sacred and secular songs, as well as historical dances, played on violin, flute, whistles, guitar, mandolin, concertina, bodhran, glockenspiel, harmonium, and vocals.
