Canadian singer-songwriter Jerry Leger's latest release, Lucky Streak, is a live-in-the-studio album produced by Michael Timmins of Cowboy Junkies. It includes solo acoustic re-recordings of songs throughout Leger's body of work, presented the way they were written or the way they've evolved. Lucky Streak follows Leger's Mark Howard (Lucinda Williams, Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Willie Nelson) produced record Donlands. Released on Cowboy Junkies label, Latent Recordings, Donlands was greeted with rave reviews from UK's Uncut Magazine and Rolling Stone Germany. Jerry toured those parts of the world in support of Donlands as well as select Canadian dates. These performances included his debut on the historic Massey Hall stage in Toronto and shows opening for legendary artist Steve Earle. One of the most respected singer-songwriters around, Ron Sexsmith says, “Leger has that spark in him that all the great songwriters have. He's the real deal.”
In the spring of 2024, singer-songwriter Jerry Leger recorded some Hank Williams compositions in the intimate atmosphere of his Toronto apartment.
These home recordings turned into the tribute album Why Should We Try Anymore, a digital-only Bandcamp release. Selections from the album were also made available on a limited edition 10″ Vinyl record.
“This was a fine break from reality for me”, says Jerry, reflecting on the passion project. The recordings made on an old 4-track tape recorder are dedicated to his grandfather, Richard Johnston, who introduced Jerry to Williams’ music. “When he wasn’t listening to ball games on the radio, it was Hank.”
Becoming more serious about songwriting in his teens, Leger returned to the music of Hank Williams and heard it differently and deeper. Williams’ would turn into one of Jerry’s favourite artists and biggest influences.
