Presentation: The Odd Family of Feldspathoid Minerals
With our upcoming field trip to the COVIA Blue Mountain Quarry and past trips to the Princess Sodalite Mine, this presentation looks at the odd family of feldspathoids. Members include nepheline, sodalite, leucite, and cancrinite. Although they have different crystalline structures, all are framework aluminosilicates that form when there is no or little free silica in the igneous melt. The presentation includes the unusual geologic conditions that are required for their formation and why the Canadian Shield north of Peterborough is a renowned collecting area.
Please bring your favourite felspathoid specimens as well as your treasured finds so far this summer.
