Enjoy two full days (October 3rd and 4th) of creative exploration with Helen Dannelly, a seasoned artist educator, curator and co-founder of Catalyst Art Lab, an online art school.
This workshop is a deep dive into three-dimensional forms and includes presentations, demos, discussions, hands on practice, Q&A sessions and a critique. Helen will provide tips and techniques for how to create durable, structural forms, discuss display options (free-standing, wall-mounted, pedestal or hanging) and show how to resolve them. She will offer examples and demonstrations of various surface treatments that include texturing with joint compound, painting with acrylic paints and mediums, oil and cold wax with graphite, as well as encaustic and even fabric. There will be ample studio time for students to create at least three forms with personalized attention from the instructor. Students will allow their pieces to dry overnight. On day two, Helen will demonstrate multiple mediums and options for surface treatments, including encaustic. Then students will choose the surface treatments they would like to try and apply those techniques to their work in service of their creative vision.
By the end of the workshop, each student will have learned how to create 3 structurally sound, display-ready small organic or geometric shaped maquettes no larger than 8" x 8". These techniques can be applied to future sculptural creations in larger formats and with alternative surface treatments.Instructor Helen Dannelly draws on over 30 years of professional experience in helping students realize their artistic goals. Helenβs teaching is informed by a unique combination of training that she utilizes in guiding participants conceptually and technically. She received a BA from UC Santa Cruz, studied painting at San Francisco State University (with Bay Area photorealists Robert Bechtle and Richard McLean) and sculpture at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis.
An award-winning artist, Helen Dannelly is a trained painter and sculptor who has been exhibiting and teaching for decades. Helen is Curator at the Forshey Gallery at the Chicago Temple First United Methodist Church in the Chicago Loop which primarily highlights the work of women artists of color. She is the creator and facilitator of the international "Reboot Retreats for Creatives" to help overwhelmed artists pause, reflect and recalibrate their creative goals.
