Iowa's Lost Lichens

When people of European descent first began settling in Iowa, elk were still common throughout the state. By the late 1800s, however, elk had disappeared. What other Iowa species have been lost due to human activity since European settlement? The decline of large animals like elk is easy to notice, but what about the smaller, often overlooked species?

Join us at the Swiss Valley Nature Center for a presentation by Dr. James Colbert of Iowa State University, and discover the fascinating world of lichens, including the species we’ve very “lichenly” lost from Iowa.
