Join TCNJ Department of Music for their first Faculty Artist Recital of the 2025-26 season!
This concert explores the connections between Jazz harmony and language, and the Afro-Cuban/Afro-Caribbean rhythms. The program features original compositions by Professor Beavers and Dr. Beviá, as well as pieces by two of the greatest Latin Jazz pianists: Eddie Palmieri and Chucho Valdés. While honoring the great tradition of Latin Jazz pianists, this concert also features Pursuance, a fast minor Blues in Bb, and one of the movements of John Coltrane's masterpiece A Love Supreme. Mambo Influenciado, composed by Chucho Valdés, is a minor Blues in D, which highlights the influences of Jazz harmony and improvisation on the Danzón, which originates from Cuba. Small Wonder is a Latin Jazz composition inspired by the music of Stevie Wonder. The Smell of the Sunshine honors the styles of Ahmad Jamal and Bill Evans, and features unpredictable time signature shifts, and thematic developments. Reflejo del Sol*, is part of Beavers' Luna suite, and was inspired by Brazilian songwriter Ivan Lins. Luna*, is a Bolero, a slow ballad which originated in Cuba, featuring the trombone as a vocal instrument. La Guarida, inspired by Beviá's trip to Havana, where the composer had the chance to interact with local musicians while breathing in the robust Cuban culture. Picadillo is a Mambo jam tune, composed by Tito Puente, that we perform here to honor the life of NEA Jazz Master Eddie Palmieri, who passed away on August 6th, 2025.
