About the event

Bears with Bruce McLellan
🐻Join us for an evening presentation about bears with speaker Bruce McLellan, who will highlight a few chapters of his book (Grizzly Bear Science and the Art of a Wilderness Life) in his quest to understand “what interactions determine the abundance of grizzly bears?” and “why do bears do what bears do?” and maybe share a few stories of living and raising a family off-grid in a remote study area. Bruce will also summarize his findings in the Southcoast Mountains (Sea to Sky area) and the Elk Valley near Fernie B.C, as these areas have interesting similarities.

Beware. Bruce is a scientist so there will be graphs, plots, and numbers, not just pretty pictures and bear stories. But there will be no equations…this time!

This event is free to attend, however registration is required! Reserve your seat here: https://pembertonlibrary.ca/event/bears-with-bruce-mclellan/

🐻About Bruce:
Dr. Bruce McLellan is a retired Wildlife Research Ecologist who, since 1978, has done radio telemetry and DNA based field research on grizzly bears in the Flathead Valley of Southeastern BC, and since 2007 in the coastal mountains of Southwestern BC including the Whistler and Pemberton areas. He has authored dozens of science journal papers on grizzly bears and caribou. Over the decades he has been involved with many land-use, access management, and recreation management processes and, with others, initiated the Bear Awareness Society in the 1990s that now evolved into Wildsafe BC. Bruce has been President of the International Association for Bear Research and Management, then co-chaired the IUCN Bear Specialist Group for 15 years. In his retirement he wrote the book Grizzly Bear Science and the Art of a Wilderness Life that summarizes his 45 year study of grizzly bears in the Flathead Valley.
