The Third Degree - Nelan, Virant, and the Attempted Impeachment of a Sherifff

A headline-making Prohibition Era scandal and tragedy hit the front page in the late summer of 1932, dragging on over a year, and involving two murders, a brutal beating of an inmate by Tazewell County Jail staff, a long legal drama, culminating in an attempt to impeach the Tazewell County Sheriff.

Pekin Public Library Local History Program Coordinator Jared Olar will recount the sensational saga of Martin Virant's death at the hands of his jailers and his family's quest for justice.
