The Very Nostrils of Hell: The Erie Canal and the Port at Buffalo

In recognition of the Erie Canal’s bicentennial and ahead of the 12th Maritime Heritage Conference this September, author and historian Mike Vogel presents a look at Buffalo’s historic waterfront.

Vogel, president of the Buffalo Lighthouse Association and author of Buffalo’s Waterfront, will explore how the Erie Canal helped transform Buffalo into a commercial powerhouse. He will also share the story of the city’s once-notorious canal district, known as “the very nostrils of hell,” now reimagined as a family-friendly heritage district.
