About the event

Del Puerto Canyon Bioblitz and Trash Cleanup
Join us on October 4th, 2025 for a dual bioblitz and trash cleanup in Del Puerto Canyon! The montage of images above were all taken during past canyon bioblitzes for examples of some of the cool stuff that can be found here. A bioblitz is an event where people come together to make detailed observations of the plants and animals they find in an area and then upload them to public databases like iNaturalist, along with gathering other types of data. They provide valuable information for scientists, conservationists, and other stakeholders, as well as helping to raise public awareness. We will have trash bags and other supplies for cleaning up trash we come across. If we encounter any excessively large trash piles/items, we will make a note of their locations to report to the county for disposal.

Initial meetup: 10am at 3300 Del Puerto Canyon Road - just east of the rock sign off of the I-5 Patterson exit. Once people arrive, in addition to waivers, etc., maps will be handed out showing the site(s) we will caravan to as a group. Since cell reception is poor in the canyon and location services may be limited for some, those handouts can serve as useful guides for manually finding the locations to add to your observations. The maps with labeled locations will also useful for those who are using DSLR cameras to take photos instead of their cell phones and plan to record observations later using a desktop computer. The main bioblitz will go until at least noon-early afternoon. However, the ending is open-ended, depending on what the group decides. Those who want to leave early and those who want to stay later are both free to do so. Please remember to bring sturdy shoes, sunscreen, plenty of water, a phone or camera, and prepare to have some fun!

For this bioblitz, we will be using iNaturalist.org and the iNaturalist app (free) to record and upload our observations:
