Juneteenth Celebration
Join us June 21 starting at 11:00 a.m. for our annual Juneteenth Celebration featuring the Freetown Village Singers.
The celebration of Juneteenth dates back to 1865, commemorating the day when 250,000 slaves in the state of Texas, the last bastion for slavery during the final days of the Civil War, were declared free by the U.S. Army.
President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, declaring that all persons held as slaves in the Confederate states “are, and henceforward shall be free.”
It took over two years for the news to reach Texas.
On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived to take control of Texas and enforce the emancipation of slaves in the state. In Galveston, Texas, the newly freed slaves held large public celebrations, setting the precedent for the future celebration of Juneteenth.
The Freetown Village Singers
The Freetown Village Singers from Indianapolis, Indiana, will be entertaining us at Juneteenth this year.
Since 1988, the Freetown Village Singers have been entertaining and educating audiences with a mixture of storytelling and singing, presenting traditional folk songs and Negro spirituals while preserving African American traditions and culture. You’ll enjoy the songs and the stories and learn about the hidden meanings carried in the lyrics of songs such as “Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child.”
