One hundred years ago, 1925 saw the development and first exhibition of Surrealism. A key concept in early Surrealism was automatism a method of making art in which the artist suppresses conscious control often allowing chance occurrences to guide the art making process. Most often the artist would begin with automatist processes and then adapt them into a final piece.
Half of the works include in Exquisite Corpse were curated from an open call and then paired with an invited artists work by PACs curatorial team.
The title of the exhibition is inspired by the well known collaborative game “Exquisite Corpse” (cadavre exquis), where folded drawings or phrases were completed in sequence by multiple participants without seeing the whole. The resulting hybrid figures and uncanny juxtapositions embody automatism’s embrace of chance and collective imagination—an apt touchstone for this centenary.
