CHEROKEE WAMPUM BELTS with Karen Coody Cooper

Cherokee artist, author, and historian, Karen Coody Cooper, will present the history of Cherokee wampum belts, how they were used, and speculation on their current status.
Karen will offer a wampum belt weaving class, examples of materials from which wampum belts are made, and looms that are strung and partially started. She will explain how the loom is set up, how the process begins, and teach students how to complete portions of the belts. The less adventurous are welcome to try a sheet of chart paper wherein they can work at creating a bead pattern before they advance to the loom.
Participants will receive a copy of her book: Cherokee Wampum and will be free to view her workbooks of wampum art that she has entered in art shows and exhibits, and catalogues from which she purchases her supplies.
