Readytex Art Gallery proudly presents Waka Tjopu: Echoes of a Movement – a remarkable retrospective on a compelling chapter in Surinamese art history.
This exhibition brings together the still-active members of the artist collective Waka Tjopu – perhaps for the very last time. The result is a unique visual account of their shared commitment to raising social awareness and promoting cultural decolonization during the turbulent 1980s of the young Republic of Suriname.
The name Waka Tjopu – derived from a Surinamese marble game – symbolizes constant motion and the pursuit of ever-evolving goals. That is precisely what these artists did: they used art as a tool for national development and social engagement. The exhibition tells their story through archival materials, photographs, and collective artworks, as well as individual pieces by artists René Tosari, Ray Daal, John Djojo, Steve Ammersingh, Kenneth Flijders, Rudi Wagiso, Winston van der Bok †, and Soeki Irodikromo †.
Waka Tjopu: Echoes of a Movement casts light on a fascinating episode in Suriname’s art history. But it is more than a retrospective. It invites reflection and dialogue on the role of art in times of change, and what it can continue to mean, now and in the future.
