Battle of Lostwithiel 1644 – a nationally significant battle
The Battle of Lostwithiel 1644 - an English Civil War battle involving four armies and a navy, fought across ten square miles over ten long days. It was the King's most decisive victory and a key catalyst to the creation of the New Model Army.
This is an opportunity to explore this nationally significance Cornish battlespace with two walks in one day.
Lostwithiel & Castle Dore - battlefield walks & talks
A morning walk around Lostwithiel will discuss the tightening royalist siege. It will cover the breakout of Essex's horse and the explosion that destroyed St Bartholomew's Church and much of the town. The meeting point for this first walk will be at @LostwithielCommunityCentre at 10:30. Car parking is usually available in Pleyber Christ Way. The walk will aim to end at Lostwithiel Bridge at about 12:30.
An afternoon walk to Castle Dore will discussion of the parliamentarian withdrawal into the Fowey peninsula. It will consider navy re-supply, the battle across Tywardreath – Castle Dore – Gollant. It will end with the final surrender of Essex's army. This second walk will start at 14:00 from Torfrey. This 2.5km walk (there and back) should take approximately two hours. However, it does involve footpaths across some steep fields, a fence and the possibility of encountering cattle.
