Community Indigo Dye Vat

We'll meet in Studio U4 at Cubberley to prep our items and indigo dye them. Each particpant is invited to dye one item--either a provided square of cotton fabric or a clean, small, natural-fiber item that you bring with you (eg a single skein of yarn, a linen tea-towel, a cotton t-shirt, a silk scarf, etc). To avoid wasting dye and make sure we have enough indigo for everyone, large, synthetic, or especially absorbant items won't be possible to dye at this event (eg no blankets, bath towels, or sweatshirts, sorry!). If you want to bring your own item to dye, please be mindful of size and fiber content, thanks!

There will be some rubber bands and thread available to play around with shibori or tie-dye patterns, if you want to get fancy. Jaya will provide a few resist examples for inspiration, but you'll mostly be on your own to play around with your design. If you have a particular vision, you're welcome to do your own research on how to acheive the extensive patterns possible through folding, scrunching, tying, and clamping (a quick google of "shibori techiques" will yield SO many resist strategies!). Or you can keep things simple and dip-dye with no resist at all. Depending on how much prep you choose to do, your process might be very quick, but we have a full hour set aside for folks who would like to try out a more complicated resist pattern.

Dye can be messy, so it's suggested that you wear stain-friendly clothes. There will be a few pairs of gloves and aprons to share, but if you have your own, please bring them. There will also be some plastic grocery bags to take home your freshly-dyed items, but if you're worried about leakage in transport, bring a water-proof bag or tub that meets your own personal standards.
