Kavita Shah returns to Portugal after her great success in 2023 and 2024 to present “Cape Verdean Blues” live at Palmela Wine Jazz, a free festival about 30 minutes south of Lisbon.
The award-winning jazz vocalist and American composer will present her acclaimed album “Cape Verdean Blues”, in honor of her idol, Cesária Évora. Kavita will be accompanied on stage by Bau and Dany Fonseca on guitars and N’Du on percussion.
At the heart of this 12-track album is sodade, an idiomatic word with no equivalent in English, but which evokes a melancholy feeling of transience that permeates Cape Verde, its music and its free-spirited island population. As a daughter of diaspora herself, Shah states, “In this paradise in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, I found a sense of home that eluded me for most of life. Looking back, I realise that when I heard Cesária’s voice almost a decade ago, she was calling me down a path in search of my own sodade.”
A collaboration with renowned guitarist Bau (Cesária Évora, Tito Paris, Bius) and visionary percussionist Miroca Paris (Madonna, Cesária Évora), the album was released in August 2023 on the Folkalist Records label.
