About the exhibition
Step into a world crafted with passion and fired by imagination.
For 80 remarkable years, the Robert Gordon story has unfolded, a true testament to Australian ingenuity in clay. From Colin and June Dyson’s pioneering spirit at Dyson Studios in 1945 Black Rock, navigating the industry as its sole female potter, to the establishment of The Pack Track Pottery by her son Robert ‘Andy’ Gordon and his wife Barbara in Gembrook, this family’s journey is etched in every curve and glaze.
Explore the evolution from a humble tin shed to a thriving Pakenham headquarters, now helmed by the third generation, Hannah and Bobby Gordon, crafting exquisite pieces for home, hospitality, and interiors.
This exhibition celebrates not just the beloved pottery found in countless spaces across the nation and beyond, but the enduring legacy of a family whose hands have shaped Australian ceramics for three generations – a story as unique and cherished as the pieces they create.

The Soundscape of Robert Gordon Pottery listen closely
What do you hear when you explore the exhibition?
Step into the aural world of the Robert Gordon Pottery. This soundscape captures the vibrant energy of a regular day of manufacturing and crafting. Listen for the pulse of the workshop, from the deep whir of the slip tank machine and the plate machines to the rhythmic sound of pouring and stirring glaze. The quiet moments are just as important. Hear the satisfying thud of clay being sliced, the gentle release of a mould, and the soft, tactile sound of hand-finishing ceramics, including the unique scrape of fettling. Listen as the pottery wheel spins, and the grinding machine buzzes, smoothing the bases of basins and plates. The process continues as stacks of plates are carefully loaded onto shelves. It’s the unique soundtrack of a busy and inspiring place, a symphony created by a team of creative craftspeople bringing beautiful things to life.
