About the event

Mulching & Fertilizing Class: Building Soil Health
Learn best practices, mulch plants, tools, fertilizers and amendments to feed your fruit trees and gardens for maximum health and productivity.

Mulching feeds plants, suppresses weeds, holds moisture, and prevents erosion. Learn how, when, where, and why to mulch.

We’ll cover simple, cost-effective organic fertilizers and amendments, plus how often, where, and when to apply them using a fertilizing schedule.

Get recipes for amending planting holes for fruit trees and garden plants to boost success. NPK, Ph adjustment, and soil nutrient basics.

Learn to turn “W**d tree problems” into “feed tree solutions” by making stick or log mulch to support edible crops. We’ll cover effective methods for using common W**d trees—albezia, melocia, gunpowder tree, cecropia, guava, and others—as biomass. We’ll also cover which trees (like schefflera and African tulip) need special handling to prevent spreading.

Ice cream bean and gliricidia are nitrogen-fixing trees that can be repeatedly coppiced for mulch. Mexican sunflower and cassava are fast-growing biomass plants that can also be cut often when used correctly. Even cane grass can build soil when cut and covered with W**d mat.

County mulch from Hilo’s green waste facility will be discussed, including how to use it effectively.

We’ll cover must-have tools for harvesting mulch and how to use them. A short tour will show mulch trees before and after harvest, along with freshly mulched beds and tree doughnuts.

The class includes a 2-hour photo-rich slideshow and a 30-minute guided tour with live demonstrations.

Taught by Wade Bauer, with 20+ years of food-growing experience in Hawai‘i.

Learn how to give your fruit trees and gardens the care they deserve and they will nourish you in return!

2 hr Photo-rich slideshow followed by a 30 min guided tour with demonstrations and examples of mulching and fertilizing.
