🐋 OXNARD GEM & MINERAL CLUB OCTOBER MEETING 🦴 👻🐳
ROCKSTAR GUEST SPEAKER: Dr. Jonathan Hoffman
Paleontologist & Curator of Earth Science, Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History
🌊 "From Beach Walk to Scientific Discovery: The 13-Million-Year-Old Gaviota Coast Whale"
Join us for an extraordinary presentation about one of the most significant fossil discoveries in our region! Dr. Hoffman will share the incredible story of how a casual beach walk by Geologist Chris Driesbach after the January 2024 storms led to the discovery of a nearly complete 13-16 million-year-old whale skull at Tajiguas Beach.
You'll hear about:
🪨The dramatic helicopter rescue operation needed to recover the massive fossil skull
🪨What this rare, possibly the most complete whale skeleton ever, tells us about ancient marine life
🪨The painstaking process of fossil preparation and study
🪨Other marine fossils found along our Central Coast and the Channel Islands (Sea Cow)
🪨How local fossil enthusiasts can contribute to science
This is a rare opportunity to hear from the scientist who led this groundbreaking recovery right in our backyard on the Gaviota Coast!
