Butoh class on Saturday: Facing the Unconscious

This class will be led by Helen Edwards.

A powerful aspect of butoh that sets it apart from other dance forms is its emphasis on improvisation, rather than carefully choreographed sequences of movements. Dancers aim to step beyond the social constraints of movement and tap into the emotionally charged unconscious, bringing hidden thoughts and feelings to the surface to be confronted and transformed. In this class, Helen will lead us into the realms of the unconscious and working with specific physical tasks and the imagination to discover how these shape the dance that emerges.

Butoh is not just a dance form. It connects people to other dancers and to the world around them and embraces the multiplicity of identities of human beings, the traits that many people and societies find hard to face.
