Wednesdays in July and August are dedicated to youth ages 11-16. Participants will work on art projects that include instructions about drawing, collage, painting, composition, colour theory, and more. Cost includes all materials.
Ages 11-16 – Wednesdays in July & August from 1:00-3:00pm. Sign up for one or all of the sessions.
Cost: $45 / session
July 16 – Nature Prints & Botanical Gel Plate Monoprinting – Participants use gel printing plates and natural materials (leaves, grasses, flowers, etc.) to create layered monoprints that explore texture, colour, and negative space. Through this hands-on project, they learn the basics of printmaking while building a mini-series of original nature-inspired prints. This process-based activity encourages exploration over perfection, letting youth focus on discovery and visual rhythm through repetition and variation.
July 23 – Encaustic Explorations for Youth – Participants will create a small encaustic painting using molten wax, collage, and simple mark-making tools. The focus is on introducing encaustic as a tactile, buildable medium and allowing teens to experiment with layering, texture, and translucency in a safe, guided environment.
July 30 – Zine-Making: Mini Manifestos – Participants create one-page folded zines that act as personal manifestos — visual and verbal declarations of what matters to them. These mini-publications can be political, emotional, poetic, funny, weird, or deeply personal. They will explore DIY publishing, narrative structure, and mixed media layout in a format that is small, expressive, and shareable.
Aug 6 – Handmade Protest Patches: Art You Can Wear – Participants design and create their own fabric protest patches using text and imagery to express something they care about — whether it’s a personal belief, social cause, identity, or sense of humour. These can be ironed or sewn onto bags, jackets, or fabric wall banners. This project introduces participants to the history of wearable art as activism and gives them the opportunity to merge visual design with bold messaging.
Aug 13 – Altered Books: Visual Journals from Found Pages – Participants transform discarded books into personal visual journals or conceptual art pieces. Using mixed media, collage, text, and layering, they explore themes like identity, dreams, social commentary, or inner worlds — without needing to start from a blank page. This project encourages intuitive art-making, experimentation, and personal voice while introducing the concept of art as transformation and reclamation.
Aug 20 – “In Case of Emergency” Kits – Participants create small, symbolic “emergency kits” using boxes and found or fabricated mini-objects. These kits can be humorous, emotional, surreal, or practical — entirely up to the participant. The goal is to design an object that tells a story or delivers a message through its contents.
