One of the greatest gifts women religious can share with other Sisters from their own congregation, their families, and those who they minister to is a sense of their own resilience …but they can’t share what they don’t have.
By discussing psychological and classical spiritual approaches to maintaining a healthy perspective in challenging times, Dr. Wicks, author and expert on the prevention of secondary stress (the pressures experienced in reaching out to others) will offer insights into how women religious can lead rich psychological and spiritual lives in challenging times without losing their own inner fire in the process.
Topics will include: understanding the importance of offering a nonjudgmental presence, maintaining a healthy sense of perspective—especially during these unusually stressful times; avoiding the dangers that lead to unnecessary stress; developing your own self-care protocol; knowing the 4 “voices” you need in your circle of friends to maintain balance and courage in life; improving self-awareness; facing inner darkness; understanding posttraumatic growth (PTG) and developing a richer “rule of prayer”/horarium.
Practical, illustrative, and lively, this rich presentation will provide essential information on resilience, compassion, and personal/professional well-being.
Presenter: Dr. Robert J. Wicks received his doctorate in psychology from Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital and is Professor Emeritus, Loyola University Maryland. Dr. Wicks has lectured on the importance of resilience, self-care, maintaining a healthy perspective and the prevention of secondary stress (the pressures experienced in reaching out to others) in 20 different countries as well as the Mayo Clinic, Yale School of Nursing, the North American Aerospace Defense Command, Boston’s Children’s Hospital, The U.S. Army Medical Command, Harvard Divinity School, Princeton Theological Seminary, the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, the U.S. Air Force Academy and on Capitol Hill to Members of Congress and their Chiefs of Staff.
