MOVIE and an EXPERT

Join Osoyoos Desert Centre for an inspiring afternoon of film and conversation exploring the fragile future of birds and the people working to protect them. Movie and an Expert brings together two acclaimed conservation documentaries and an in-depth presentation by bird biologist David Bell.

The program features two short films. Up first is The Little Brown Bird (33 minutes), directed by KT Bryden, an Emmy-winning cinematographer and storyteller dedicated to sharing powerful narratives from the natural world. The film chronicles the urgent fight to save the Florida Grasshopper Sparrow, a species once reduced to fewer than 80 individuals in the wild. Viewers follow biologist Fabiola “Fabby” Baeza-Tarin and an unexpected team as they work to protect the sparrows, their rapidly shrinking habitat and the vital headwaters of the Everglades.

Also screening is Saving the Night Caller (22 minutes), a hauntingly beautiful documentary that follows filmmaker and conservationist Gregg McLachlan deep into the forests of Norfolk County, Ontario. Once a familiar nighttime presence, the call of the Eastern Whip-poor-will is now growing increasingly rare. Through stunning visuals and quiet moments in the darkened woods, the film reveals the mystery of a species slowly falling silent.

Following the films, local wildlife biologist David Bell highlights findings from the 2025 Migration Monitoring season at the Vaseux Lake Bird Observatory and also explores how the Motus Wildlife Tracking Network reveals where our local birds spend their non-breeding season. Originally from Northern Ontario, David has travelled across Canada working at the forefront of bird research.

Movie and an Expert takes place Saturday, March 7, 2026 from 1 to 3 pm at Osoyoos Secondary School Theatre, 5800 115 Street, Osoyoos, BC. General admission is $20; ODC member admission is $18. Tickets must be purchased in advance.
