Join us for an evening presentation followed by a guided walk in the Oslo Botanical Garden on the 27th of June. We will dive into the world of ethnobotany, focusing particularly on the traditional ecological knowledge of the northern Sami and Norwegian peoples. 🌿
The event is open for all, held in English and presented by Andy B. Sortland from UiT – The Arctic University of Norway.
Andy notes: “Living north of the Arctic Circle has always been challenging when it comes to keeping yourself and your family warm, fed, and healthy using only local resources. The long winters, with little or no sun and no green plants to harvest, present health challenges that populations further south do not experience to the same degree.
In this presentation, I will give examples of how the Sámi and Norwegian populations along the coast of Northern Norway coped with these challenges—and which plants were most important and why.
Even though we cannot turn back the clock and live the lives of our ancestors, there is valuable knowledge in these traditions—especially regarding the sustainable use of natural resources and local solutions to everyday needs.”
