In conversation with Illia Riepin, Karolina Hird and Jaroslava Barbieri.
Understanding Russia’s war in Ukraine also requires insight into Russia’s occupation policies and its efforts to consolidate control over Ukrainian territories. This aspect of the war is often undercommunicated in the broader media picture and spans a wide spectrum — from administrative measures to large-scale nationalisation and russification projects, forced deportations, and killings.
In this lunch seminar, we take a closer look at different dimensions of Russia’s occupation policies and their consequences, from the evolution of Russia’s control regime in occupied territories to Russia’s deportation of Ukrainian children as a case study of how occupation policies are put into practice, and how Ukrainians are resisting the occupation behind enemy lines.
You will hear from:
- Karolina Hird, Institute for the Study of War, Russia Team deputy lead and analyst
- Jaroslava Barbieri, University of Birmingham, doctoral research fellow
- Illia Riepin, political scientist and columnist in Political Philosophy & AI. Riepin is currently working with Dr Jade McGlynn on a comprehensive report on Ukrainian resistance movements in occupied territories.
