What does it mean to live in spaces between languages, between hierarchies, between worlds? When do borders protect, and when do they control?
As a part of the concert Mother Tongue (March 4th) curated by Wei Ting Tseng, we invite you to a reading session with artist and educator Belén Santillán, centered on Gloria Anzaldúa’s Borderlands / La Frontera: The New Mestiza.
“Borders are set up to define the places that are safe and unsafe, to distinguish us from them. A border is a dividing line, a narrow strip along a steep edge. A borderland is a vague and undetermined place created by the emotional residue of an unnatural boundary… It is in a constant state of transition.”
Gloria E. Anzaldúa, Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza
Writing from the experience of living between linguistic, cultural, and bodily borders, Anzaldúa blends English, Spanish, Chicano Spanish, and Nahuatl, reminding us that language is never neutral, but carries memory, shame, resistance, and belonging.
Together, we will read selected passages and reflect on the spaces between borders: the uncertain, fluid borderlands where identity, voice, and listening are shaped. What does it mean to live in these spaces between languages, between hierarchies, between worlds? When do borders protect, and when do they control?
The session offers a quiet entry into the themes of the concert Mother Tongue, while standing on its own as a space for reflection, conversation, and shared reading.
Tea and snacks will be served. No preparation is needed, you are welcome to join the reading, the concert, or both.
Duration: 18:00-19:00 (+optional participation from 19:00 – 20:00)
