On Valentine’s Day 2026, UKS opens Lessons in Love, an exhibition in motion and an unfolding year-long programme introducing seven artistic practices, with artists working both individually and together.
Lessons in Love presents works by Jacky Jaan-Yuan Kuo & Wei Ting Tseng, Jessica Williams, Yaniya Mikhalina, Joen Vedel, Minne Kersten, and Sebastian Rusten, each pondering the affectionate and often difficult relationships that shape and nourish us, presented in a moving, pulsating show that changes over the course of the exhibition period – a shifting landscape of sentiment. We present to you a declaration of devotion to loved ones living and lost, to the planet, but most of all, to art.
❤️❤️❤️
_Jacky Jaan-Yuan Kuo works between Taipei and Oslo. He works with site-responsive installations, sculptures, sound and collaborative storytelling. Delving into the paradoxes of intimacy, friendship, queerness and religion.
_Wei Ting Tseng was born in Taiwan and is based in Oslo. She plays the cello, composes, listens and rarely separates one from the other. Tseng moves freely between contemporary, improvised and early music and is drawn to how sound bends space.
___Kuo and Tseng work together as a duo in the loose space between sound, memory and perception. Their collaborations wander through installation, performance and shared readings, following how narratives migrate, change shape and return.
_Jessica Williams is an artist, publisher, educator and curator born in Alaska and based on the island of Jeløya. A photographer and currently leaning towards sculpture, her practice manifests freely between mediums including social practice, text and installation.
_Yaniya Mikhalina is a Volga Tatar artist and thinker based in Oslo. She works between (moving) image-making, multilingual writing, listening and archiving, with a particular interest in the political-spiritual dimension of documentary practices.
_Joen Vedel is an artist, organiser and filmmaker with a background in activism and long-term collaborative commitments. His work encompasses critical media archives, film, installation, text, performance, curation, facilitation and various forms of collaborations.
___Working together, Mikhalina and Vedel have started to reflect further on questions related to parenthood and social reproduction; the idea and ideologies of childhood; and to grief, loss and the collective responsibility of giving life.
_Minne Kersten is based in Paris and Amsterdam. She works with video, installation and painting. Her work connects intimate themes such as mourning, loss and desire, and our collective domain of fiction, fables and symbol making.
_Sebastian Rusten is based in Trondheim and works with foraging as the foundation of his practice. He collects and processes plant materials, such as pine needles, bark and mushrooms. He combines craftsmanship with intuitive exploration as a method for listening to and collaborating with the materials he gathers.
