Da den indiske forfatteren og tenkeren Pankaj Mishra ga ut boka "Raseriets tidsalder. En historie om nåtiden" (til norsk ved Agnete Øye) i 2017, analyserte han hvordan og hvorfor de som føler seg forbigått av samfunnet, gjorde opprør mot globaliseringen og det bestående. Han viste hvordan de flokket til høyrepopulistiske partier rundt i Europa, valgte Donald Trump som president i USA, og gikk til angrep på liberale demokratier verden over.
I 2025 ser vi at de samme bevegelsene er på full fart mot å oppnå sine mål, og viser med det noe Mishra satte ord på alt i 2017: «den gamle vestligdominerte verdensordenen [er] i ferd med å gi etter for en tilsynelatende global uorden.»
Hva er årsakene til at samfunnet går i oppløsning rundt oss? Er dette noe nytt i vår politiske historie, eller er vi i ferd med å gjenta et mørkt kapittel fra fortiden?
Pankaj Mishra er en ledende intellektuell, kjent for sin kritikk av etablerte narrativer. Han har skrevet både romaner og essays, og har markert seg med kritikerroste utgivelser som "From the Ruins of Empire: The Intellectuals Who Remade Asia" og årets utgivelse, "Verden etter Gaza".
I den aller første Wergeland-forelesningen på Litteraturhuset vil Mishra snakke om hvordan historien påvirker nåtiden, og hvordan nåtidige narrativer bidrar til å forme historien. Forelesningen vil bli etterfulgt av en kort Q&A med forfatter og journalist Yohan Shanmugaratnam.
Wergeland-forelesningen avholdes for første gang i 2025, og vil være en årlig begivenhet. Hvert år vil Stiftelsen Litteraturhuset invitere internasjonale stemmer som gjennom sitt virke og sin litteratur viderefører Henrik Wergelands ånd.

When Indian writer and intellectual Pankaj Mishra published his "Age of Anger: A History of the Present", in 2017, his analysis was in large part based on how the disenfranchised were pushing back against globalization and the establishment, flocking to far-right parties across Europe, electing Donald Trump as president of the United States, and pushing back against liberal democracies all over the world. In 2025, those same movements are advancing towards their goals with almost unbelievable speed, proving what Mishra wrote already in 2017: “the old west-dominated world order is giving way to an apparent global disorder”.
What are the root causes of the disruption around us? Is this a new moment in our political history, or are we repeating a dark chapter of our past?
Pankaj Mishra is a leading intellectual, known for his critique of grand narratives. He is the author of both novels and essays, and he has made his mark with critically acclaimed titles such as "From the Ruins of Empire: The Intellectuals Who Remade Asia" and this year’s publication, "The World After Gaza".
In this inaugural Wergeland lecture at the House of Literature, Mishra will reflect on how history informs the present, and how present narratives shape our history. Following his lecture will be a short Q&A with author and journalist Yohan Shanmugaratnam.
The Wergeland lecture is held for the very first time in 2025, and will be an annual event. Each year, The House of Literature will invite an international voice who embodies Henrik Wergeland’s spirit in their work and writings.
