Guiding attendees through their research into death, dying, and decomposition using a practice they have come to call Material Necromancy, the duo invite you to join them in sitting closer with death and the deceased.

During the workshop the duo offer insight into their reclamation of the term Necromancy, which they understand broadly as an intention practice which brings them closer to their ancestors, be they familial, intellectual or chosen. Participants will then be guided through a series of activities that pair reflection with activation of the senses of taste, smell and touch. Through this work they hope to offer a space for thinking, sensing and working creatively with grief, grieving and mourning. The duo see these processes as a key to developing practices that reflect the ongoingness of death and our relationships with those that have departed.

Information for potential workshop participants:

Over the course of Hanging Garden, this full-day workshop will be offered three times:
Tuesday 16.September, 10:00-15:00
Wednesday 17.September, 16:00-21:00
Saturday 20.September,10:00-15:00

Participation is limited to 5 attendees per workshop, and a vegetarian meal will be provided.

Attendees are asked to bring with them a food item to share that reminds them / brings them closer to someone who has died, and to come with some ideas of a deceased person they would like to invite to join the workshop with them. This is an open invitation – the deceased guest could be a close or beloved one, or an intellectual ancestor. The guest should be someone participants would like to feel closer to or be in conversation with.

Flo + Owen suggest that attendees come with more than one idea of who their guest could be, and attendees will have time to feel out the space and the group before making a decision on who they would like to invite.

The workshop will begin with an introduction to Flo + Owen’s research into death, dying, and decomposition and their ideas about Material Necromancy, and reclaiming notions of necromancy from the realm of pop-culture. They take a broad approach to the idea of necromancy, seeking to understand how it has been historically weaponized to diminish and demonize non-christian traditions dealing with death, dying and mourning.

They will introduce various examples of material necromancy, focusing on the potential for ongoingness that processes of decomposition offer.

At this point participants will be guided through an intention setting practice, where they will choose who their guest for the rest of the day will be.

After this intention setting we will share a meal and create a personalized herbal tea blend with our guests.

At the end of the workshop Flo + Owen will offer attendees options for actions to provide closure to the work of the day.

The framework offered in this workshop can be engaged with in a variety of ways, from the spiritual to the energetic to the psychological, and the choice of how to engage with what is offered is left open to participants to decide for themselves.

It is possible to join the workshop, and decide at the moment of intention setting to not invite a guest, while still participating fully in the rest of the day. It is not required that participants share or divulge any information about who they have invited, but there is open space to do so, if they desire it.

Together they are interested in understanding how a social practice might work when removed from a focus on the anthropocentric, inviting in the agencies of other entities from living organisms to “inanimate” beings such as rocks.
