The history of voice technologies such as the vocoder and autotune shows that what is creatively interesting often lies in their “exploitation”. However, the current wave of AI-powered voice technologies is based on exploitable voice work by artists, calling us to rethink the concept of “creative exploitation.” It expands to a broader ecosystem of voices and datasets.

This workshop introduces the new open, hackable and playful voice synthesis tool Tungnaá and discusses the cultural, economic and ethical importance of “creative exploitation” in music based on “vocal data”.

Jonathan Reus is a transdisciplinary musician who explores the intertwining of people and technology. With training in electronic music, visual arts, mathematics and computer science, his work includes solo performances, compositions, instrument making, installations, AI radio projects and web-based sound art. Over the last decade he has developed artistic methods for using vocal technologies in live performances. Jonathan received a Fulbright scholarship to develop new musical instruments at STEIM in Amsterdam. He is a co-founder of initiatives such as the instrument inventors initiative (iii) in The Hague and Netherlands Coding Live (nl_cl). His work has been shown internationally, including: at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, at IRCAM/Center Pompidou, ZKM Karlsruhe, Ars Electronica and at the CTM Festival. He is an affiliate researcher at the University of Iceland's Intelligent Instruments Lab and the Sussex Digital Humanities Lab.
