This is a two-part group dialogue exploring the experience of anxiety. You are welcome to attend either gathering or join both. Each session can be attended independently, though participating in both is encouraged.
Anxiety is not a singular experience. Many of us who do not fit into neat diagnoses, or who do not have help available, find ourselves wondering if there is something fundamentally wrong with us, or functioning as a shell of who we sense we could or should be. Even those who seek and receive help may feel that something is still missing.
Part I: March 24 | Understanding Anxiety
In the first gathering we will explore the spectrum of ‘normal’ to pathological anxiety, current approaches to treatment, techniques for reducing anxiety, and how we relate to this experience in ourselves and others. The goal of the first talk is to establish a shared language before taking a deeper dive into what the experience of anxiety actually is and how we meet it in our lives.
Part II: April 9 | Anxiety, Fear, and Control
The second gathering will explore how anxiety relates to fear, and how fear in turn relates to control, both personal and collective. We will question possible roots of anxiety, what it may be seeking to communicate, and how we might live with, rather than simply attempt to eliminate, this all too familiar feeling.
This gathering is for those who recognize this feeling, who find themselves on the margins of ‘normality’, and who wish to interrogate this fundamental and ubiquitous human experience in order to live a life less controlled by fear and distress.
This talk will not be group therapy, but rather an exploration in group, where we support one another in how we understand, meet, and reframe one of the most prevalent experiences of our time.
