When George Floyd was murdered in May 2020, the outpouring of anger towards those who took his life was also met by a reactive refrain that all lives mattered and that race does not exist. Yet, why is this denial of race, and therefore of racism, still so problematic? One of the reasons is our understanding of race as a construct is incomplete, and this book, A Phenomenology of Racism looks to explore our understanding of race through our experience of conscious and unconsciously internalised racism. Seeing race as a construct of whiteness, of patriarchy and of class superiority, the book recognises how race has defined so many of us; how we may aspire to be racially superior, and how we may suffer the trauma of being racially seen as the other.
This three-hour book launch event expands upon the book’s phenomenological exploration of these themes through the utilisation of often creatively presented personal and case material common to counselling and psychotherapy. This is an event which also recognises that this is a text designed to offer definitive, undeniable proof to the breadth and the experience and existence of racism, a text which will be an essential read for anyone interested in this area of client work within counselling and psychotherapy.
This workshop will be recorded and you can use the ticket function to pre-purchase the recording before the event. This will be useful for colleagues who are not able to attend the event live and also for those who attend the event live and want to watch it again.
