Stand UP & Speak OUT! the Musical, is performed annually at the Kate by a cast of local youth. This life-changing production addresses issues faced by our youth such as feelings of exclusion and disconnection from their peers, schools, and communities. The story shows how to identify harmful behaviors and to learn how to lead with kindness to combat negativity and exclusion.
The Stand UP & Speak OUT Workshop will be an interactive one-day workshop who will be exploring the powerful themes of Stand UP & Speak OUT!
Participants (ages 10-14) will step into the shoes of different characters, analyzing their perspectives, motivations, and challenges in a deep dive into a pivotal scene from the show. Through guided discussions and performance exercises, participants will unpack the emotions behind the dialogue and discover how each character’s journey shapes the story.
Participants will also analyze a song from the musical, breaking down its lyrics to understand how it drives the narrative and reinforces the show’s message. Through reflection and group discussions, all will explore how music, storytelling, and empathy come together to inspire change.
Participants should arrive at the Kate promptly at 9:30 a.m. All should bring a snack or light lunch and a water bottle. (The Kate does not provide food or beverages for this event.) There will be a 15-minute break. The workshop will conclude at 1:00 p.m. Participants should dress comfortably and wear closed toe shoes or sneakers.
