A Brief History of Okanogan County Community Action Council (OCCAC)
In 1964, President Lyndon Johnson and Sargent Shriver launched the War on Poverty, aiming to address the injustices faced by the poor and minorities. This initiative led to the creation of Community Action agencies across the nation, including the Okanogan County Community Action Council (OCCAC) in 1965. OCCAC was one of the first Community Action agencies in the country, formed by a group of dedicated community members who sought to solve local problems through grassroots efforts.
Over the past 60 years, OCCAC has built a robust infrastructure to support the community, providing essential services and resources to help residents move out of poverty. The organization's mission, revised in 2018, focuses on leading a revolt on poverty through education, empowerment, and engagement. OCCAC continues to educate the community about financial skills, empower clients to achieve their goals, and engage local leaders in addressing the challenges of poverty.
