Threads of History: Examining Prince Charles Edward’s Clothing from the ‘45

Join Làmhan and HandBound Costumes for a two-day event at the West Highland Museum in Fort William, where we will be sharing insights from our ongoing research project, Threads of History. As dress historians, we are passionate about uncovering the stories that garments can tell, particularly those connected to significant historical figures and moments. This project focuses on exploring and interpreting items of clothing held in museum collections that are associated with Prince Charles Edward Stuart—often remembered as Bonnie Prince Charlie—and aims to shed light on their historical, cultural, and material significance.

We’re delighted to be working in collaboration with Michelle of HandBound Costumes, an expert historical tailor with extensive experience in reconstructing period garments using traditional techniques and materials. Michelle’s craftsmanship and deep knowledge of historical tailoring bring the research to life in a tangible and visually compelling way, offering visitors a unique opportunity to see how history is quite literally stitched together.

Whether you’re interested in 18th-century history, material culture, or the lives behind the legends, this is a chance to engage directly with the process of historical interpretation, ask questions, and see examples of reconstructed garments inspired by original pieces.

This event is entirely free to all to attend (although a donation to the museum is very welcome)
