About the event

EBPG Aug Potluck meeting: Fire & Resilience!
🌱East Bay Permaculture Guild – August Fire & Water Resilience Gathering

Monday, August 11th, 6-9pm @ PLACE for Sustainable Living
As California burns and floods, we're diving deep into fire ecology meets water restoration—the ancient wisdom and cutting-edge science of regenerating landscapes that resist flames through strategic hydration, indigenous stewardship, and community action.

(UPDATE) Featured Speakers - In a Fishbowl Conversation
Hear from three people working in different corners of the wildfire resilience and safety world who will come together in a fishbowl conversation. They'll kick things off with a 10-15 minute chat weaving together their specialities: strategic water restoration, Indigenous fire and ecology, and community wildfire safety. Then, the "current" will shift and community members will be able to join the conversation, ask questions, share ideas, and then step back out. The dialogue will ebb and flow between the core group and our community, making space for fresh perspectives, shared stories, and colalborative sparks!

Our speakers:
🔥 Christina – Water restoration practitioner and avid gardener sharing how simple strategies like "slow/spread/sink" and restored water cycles create fire-resistant landscapes. Her work highlights communities who've survived months-long fires using greywater, rainwater harvesting, and soil regeneration.
🔥 Annie Leverich – Communications Manager for the Watershed Research and Training Center (www.thewatershedcenter.com), an environmental nonprofit with local, state, and national programs to connect people and land. Based in Oakland, CA, her work focuses on cultivating better relationships with fire, and supporting the Fire Adapted Communities Learning Network (fireadaptednetwork.org - a program of the Watershed Research and Training Center).
🔥 Dr. Tony Marks-Block (CSU East Bay faculty bio or tonymarksblock.net), expert in Indigenous fire, restoration ecology, and critical pyrogeography! Tony is also hatching a new research/study group—be ready for collaborative breakouts and next steps you can join.

What to expect:
🌱 Potluck dinner
🌱 Fishbowl conversation with Christina, Annie, and Tony on wildfire resilience, water restoration, and community fire safety
🌱 Working group breakouts including Tony's potential research collective

We acknowledge that this gathering takes place on the unceded ancestral homeland of the Chochenyo-speaking Ohlone people, the original stewards of the land we now call Oakland. We honor their enduring relationship to this place, recognize the ongoing impacts of colonization, and commit to supporting Indigenous sovereignty, land return, and cultural revitalization.

Standing with all colonized peoples everywhere—from the Bay to Palestine—we build resilience through solidarity and ancestral wisdom.

PS: Monetary contributions to support buying supplies, extra food if you can't bring anything hearty, and the mission of a PLACE for sustainable living are greatly welcomed!
