Circus - Music - Community - Education
The circus is coming to Saturna!!! THE BIG SHOW will be Saturday, August 9th at 7 pm in the ball field at Winter Cove
The New Old Time Chautauqua (NOTC) is a musical and educational vaudeville circus that has been touring the Greater Northwest for 44 years bringing learning, entertainment, and laughter to rural places, acting as a catalyst for community.
NOTC is a not-for-profit, all volunteer, intergenerational organization that follows in the great footsteps of the Chautauqua movement which began in 1874. It is the world’s last and only travelling Chautauqua, and it’s taking to the high seas! In summer 2025, NOTC presents their “Aqua Chautauqua” maritime tour to Lasqueti, Port Alberni, Gabriola, Salt Spring, Galiano, Mayne and, for the first time ever, Saturna.
Come join in the fun! Follow along behind a marching band during a joyful parade. Gaze in amazement at an aerialist on silks during a variety show. Attend a workshop to learn the fine arts of hula hooping, juggling, or folding a fitted sheet. Kids will be amazed, teenagers will be inspired, and adults will wish they had practiced more magic and not frittered away their time at work.
Here is the schedule of events on Saturna:
Friday August 8 -
Community Service Project 10am-2pm
Community Potluck at the Ball Field 6pm-9pm - Bring a dish, a dessert, a fish, a bowl of berries, whatever you like. There will be music and maybe a few cogent words will be said. This is a great opportunity to share food and conversation with neighbors and Chautauquans in a relaxed atmosphere.
Saturday, August 9 -
Everybody’s Welcome Parade at noon from the General Store to the ferry Terminal, led by a marching band. Don your colorful costumes and join the jugglers, clowns, and fairies promenading and dancing down the road. The Parade will end with a Teaser Show promoting the BIG SHOW and NOTC Workshops
Workshops at the ball field from 1pm-4pm - Children and adults can learn a wide variety of skills, including juggling, acrobatics, hula hooping, herbal craft, knot tying, clowning and, best of all, how to fold a fitted sheet! Bring musical instruments for an old-fashioned song swap. Chautauqua’s workshops are always a lot of fun and interesting--a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon
THE BIG SHOW at the Ball Field at 7pm - A knock your socks off show that'll peg your giggle gage and tickle your funny bone as you guffaw in awe at some of the world’s finest vaudeville talent - including the famed Flying Karamzov Brothers and Artis the Spoonman! From jugglers to musicians, magicians to giant puppets, hula hoopists to acrobats, and everything in between, this extravaganza will keep you on your toes and at the edge of your seat. Bring a lawn chair or a picnic blanket to the ball field. Want to showcase your own act? The Chatauquans are looking for local talent to bring a story, a skit, a song, or a magic trick to the stage!
