Three Voices, One Pulse: A Night of Free Improvisation

On July 11th, Presto will host an encounter between three extraordinary musicians who redefine what wind instruments can be. Trumpeter Leonel Kaplan, and saxophonists María Mange Valencia and Ilia Belorukov come together for a first trio performance that promises to push the boundaries of sound, texture, and interplay.
With roots in Argentina, Colombia, and Russia—now based in Belgrade, Bogotá, and Novi Sad—this trio brings decades of international experience in experimental music, free improvisation, and electroacoustic practices. Each artist brings a distinct voice and method, yet they meet in a common language of spontaneity, deep listening, and sonic risk.
Leonel Kaplan (cornet) has been a vital figure in free improvisation since the early 2000s. Known for his minimal yet intense approach to sound, Kaplan has performed and recorded with some of the most innovative artists in the scene. His discography spans celebrated labels like Relative Pitch, ESP-Disk’, and Another Timbre.
María Mange Valencia (saxophone) merges her background in Latin American music with an experimental sensibility honed through collaborations with contemporary ensembles and artists across Europe and the Americas. Her playing is raw, nuanced, and unafraid of silence or rupture. Her latest solo release appeared on New York’s Relative Pitch Records.
Ilia Belorukov (saxophone) is a master of electroacoustic experimentation, using extended techniques, modular synths, and electronics to sculpt bold sonic landscapes. As founder of the Intonema label and curator of festivals and concerts across Russia and Serbia, Belorukov stands at the center of the Eastern European avant-garde.
This trio offers a powerful blend of breath, feedback, and friction—an encounter where the boundaries between sound and noise, control and chaos, dissolve in real time. Expect an immersive journey through acoustic extremes and subtle resonances.
