Drawing from a number of influences, Almodóvar’s Volver features elements of Italian neo-realism alongside its heavy dose of melodrama; the emotional intensity echoed by the backdrop of the windswept La Mancha region of Spain. Penélope Cruz gives a luminous performance as Raimuda, the centre of a film populated almost exclusively by women, dealing with the entwined, multi-generational dramatics of her family.
